As part of activities leading up to the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on June 26, Legend Golden Care Foundation (LGCF), with support from Amnesty International, carried out a community sensitization outreach at Karu Market, Abuja.
The outreach provided an opportunity to engage directly with traders, market women, youth, and other members of the community on the issue of torture, human rights, and access to support services for survivors.
During the sensitization, we educated them on their fundamental rights, the various forms torture can take, and the harmful physical and psychological effects it has on victims.
Many people are unaware that torture extends beyond physical abuse. Acts such as prolonged detention without trial, threats, intimidation and other forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment can also amount to torture and leave lasting impacts on individuals and communities.
Through conversations and awareness materials, we encouraged community members to speak up against torture, support survivors, and promote respect for human dignity.
As we mark this year’s International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, we reaffirm our commitment to creating awareness and supporting survivors of torture.
